5 Effective Methods for Removing Car Window Tint

Tinting your car windows with a professional window tint film adds a touch of style, extended privacy, and crucial UV protection. However, car tints don't last forever and need replacing once every five years.

Some common reasons you need to remove window tint include bubbling, discoloration, and patches. Removing car tint is fairly easy and doing it yourself will save you extra money on labor. However, if you’re looking for the quickest method, it’s best to go to a shop that specializes in window tint removal. Alternatively, you can use QuikSnap car sun shade for this purpose. Moreover, in removing window tint, it's crucial to consider the edge of the tint, particularly on the rear window.

In the case that you do have time to complete the job yourself, we’ve outlined 5 different methods that you can use for removing window film. Every method requires a set of different materials so make sure you have all the prerequisites before you start with the film removal process.

Method #1: Soap And Scrape Method

Materials Required:

  • Dish of soapy water/clean water
  • Spray bottles
  • Cleaning towels or pieces of cloth
  • Blades or a sharp tool

Procedure:

  • Cut the top edge of the window tint film and peel it off.
  • Use soapy water and manual scraping to remove residue.
  • Clean the window with water spray and wipe it off.

A drawback of this method is that it is slightly difficult and tiring.

Method #2: Soap And Newspaper Method

Materials Required:

  • Dish of soapy water/clean water
  • Spray bottle
  • Razor
  • Newspaper
  • Sponge

Procedure:

  • Soak newspaper in warm soapy water.
  • Stick wet newspaper onto the window.
  • Spray newspaper with soapy water to keep it moist.
  • Peel the newspaper along with the tint using razor blades.
  • Wipe away residue with a sponge.

Method #3: Use Heating Techniques

Materials Required:

    • Glass cleaner
    • Adhesive Remover
    • Hair dryer

Procedure:

  • Hold the hairdryer about 2 inches from the window and turn it on high. Alternatively, you can also use a heat gun for this purpose.
  • Pry the edge up with your fingernail once the glue melts.
  • Peel off the film and adhesives.
  • Wash the car windows with glass cleaner.

You’ll have the best results if you can apply the heat evenly. This will cause the majority of the adhesive to come off.

Method #5: Using The Ammonia And Solar Technique

Materials Required:

  • Multiple unused polythene garbage bags
  • Spray bottle with ammonia solution
  • Dish of soapy water
  • Paper towels
  • Adhesive Remover

Procedure:

  • Cut the garbage bag according to the size of your car window.
  • Stick the plastic bag on the outside with soapy water.
  • Spray ammonia solution on the inside (wear a protective mask).
  • Cover with a second garbage bag before the ammonia can dry.
  • Let it soak up the sun for at least 20 minutes before removing the bag.
  • Remove window tinting, wipe off the adhesive, and let it dry.

If you don’t want to engage in a long-drawn method, this procedure is suitable for you.
